Sorry, I've missed the main question.

Then I think it is legitimate to drop the support completely. I think that if 
someone ever uses the module with 3.x then he/she can easily stick to an 
older bsddb3 release. I think it would be sensible to keep providing the 
current release (before the legacy code removal) for some period though.
