I guess you could do "something" via ctypes, but would be fragile,
error-prone and time consuming. My choice would be to do a simple
"easy_install" to upgrade pybssdb to a "recent" version.
Remember that is you use python bundled pybssdb version, you import
"bsddb", but if you install the standalone version, you import "bsddb3".

Could you possible detail the inconvenients you have upgrading?. I am
interested. Maybe I can ease the process or improve documentation.
Do you need any other easy API coverage/improvement?. The window for
4.8.0 is still open, for a short time.
